ROYAL PORTRAIT. ART AND MEMORY

The temporary exhibition "Royal Portraiture. Art and Memory" attempts, for the first time, with the specific means of the exhibition theme but also of editorial rigor, an overview of the artistic approach and, at the same time, of historical value, which the commission of portraits of the sovereigns of Romania (from King Carol I to King Michael I) and their family members represented in the fine arts of our country.

From engravings, lithographs, camera portraits, to allegories and monumental sculptures, the imagery of the members of the Royal House of Romania had the mission of creating, beyond the image, a historical and cultural identity of a modern Romania, connected to the values of Western Europe and to the main artistic trends of the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century.

The official or private representations of the kings of Romania, the queens, the princes and princesses of the Royal Family present, within the genre of portraiture (and not only), a multitude of aspects, generated by the moment of the commission of the works of art, the purpose of their creation, the location or the sponsor. An entire gallery of royal faces (with or without military uniforms, with or without tiaras), look at us, through the brush of the painters or the chisel of the sculptors, from the exhibition's simes.

Immortalized in the catalog album "Royal Portraiture. Art and Memory", they testify to the extraordinary power of suggestion of the artists, but also to the image of a royal Romania, in which the monarch (and his family members, alike) had to assume, through image and symbol, the power and aspirations for good of the Romanian nation.
