About the exhibition

The PeleÅŸ National Museum invites you to the opening of the first fine art exhibition, entitled "The Artistic Youth of Princess Maria", which will take place on May 19, 2012 at 3:30 PM in the Hall of Honor of PeliÅŸor Castle.

"Buildings from Sighisoara" by Elena Popea
Oil on canvas, 71cm x 55cm
Unsigned, undated

The event celebrates the one hundred and tenth anniversary of the official debut of Princess Maria's artistic patronage. At the intervention of Oscar Späthe, her sculpture teacher, Maria enthusiastically accepted the honorary presidency of the "Artistic Youth" Society (1901-1947). She thus embarked on a courageous undertaking that would captivate her for the rest of her life. Through her personal prestige, as well as through her active involvement, Maria contributed to the "prosperity of the fine arts in Romania", the declared goal of the Society. A talented painter herself, author of garden designs, a keen connoisseur of the Arta 1900 phenomenon, creator of original pieces of furniture and inspired interior decorator, Maria contributed to the international recognition of the Romanian cultural phenomenon.

Founded on December 3, 1901, by a group of artists, "Tinerimea" was the longest-lived and most coherent artistic construction in Romania in the first half of the 20th century. Influenced by Western artistic models, Kimon Loghi, Ipolit Strâmbu, Gheorghe Petraşcu, Ştefan Popescu and Frederic Storck formed an artistic nucleus, around which all the artistic personalities of the era gravitated: Constantin Artachino, Arthur Verona, Nicolae Vermont, Ştefan Luchian, Nicolae Grant, Micaela Eleutheriade, Marius Bunescu, etc.

"At the Harvest" by Arthur Verona
Oil on canvas, 50cm x 70cm
Signed, undated

Focused on the years of the Society's peak artistic effervescence, the period 1901-1916, the exhibition aims to bring to the attention of visitors works from the collection of the PeleÈ™ National Museum, gathered under the emblem of "Artistic Youth". Purchased by Maria, donated to the museum from the Simu fund or recovered in the 1970s from the Writers' Union or from the National Theater's props, the paintings of over 30 artists offer the general public a royal treat of pre-war Romanian fine art.
