Made of silver-plated copper, the goblet, 21.5 cm high, represents a female character, in 17th-century clothing, of the Dutch bourgeois type, characterized by ample volumes, curved shapes, in contrast to the Spanish costume, more sober in the line drawing.<\/p>\n
The shirt visible at the collar, with tight sleeves and cuffs covering the wrists, as well as the rich collar suggest the idea of lace, offering a faithful image of the feminine coquetry of the era. The Netherlands launched the fashion of the short jacket and the corset that supported the waist, closing in front with buttons. The hair is combed back and tied in a bun. The ample skirt, representing the cup, puffed to accentuate the hips, consists of two layers, the upper one, with floral-vegetal volutes split wide, leaves the skirt underneath visible, with horizontal ruffles, decorated in overlapping registers, with palmettes, a net motif and a floral-vegetal motif. The head is slightly tilted back, the gaze directed towards the small, mobile cup, decorated with a net motif and vegetal motifs. The cup is supported by two long rods with applied decoration with "C" scrolls ending in griffin heads, which the young woman carries in her raised arms. This engagement goblet is a testament to the special talent of German goldsmiths, who possess the science of combining the hammering technique with that of pressing, engraving and silvering, in order to create a work of art of great aesthetic value.<\/p>\n
Nowadays, goldsmiths are becoming more and more inventive, so that the famous engagement goblets are provided with both a fixed cup, represented by a long, wide skirt, and a movable one, decorated with smooth cartouches, to allow the engraving of the names and date of the bride and groom's marriage, and sometimes, the wide skirt offers enough space to insert, through engraving, an entire poem. There are also engagement goblets that have cups made of crystal, preserving only the silver trunk and arms of the old ornamentation.<\/p>\n
The legend of the engagement cup, full of romance, dates back to the mid-15th century, its appearance being linked to the old city of Nuremberg. According to the legend, the noblewoman Kunigunde fell in love with a young and ambitious silversmith, much to the displeasure of her father, a famous aristocrat, who opposed their love story. Overly in love, she refused the most advantageous marriage matches one after another, arousing her father's anger.<\/p>\n
The young woman's father orders the craftsman to be imprisoned, but the tears and increasing sadness of the beautiful Kunigunde finally persuade him. Freedom, however, has its price and is conditioned by the degree of mastery of the young man, who is forced to forge an enchanted goblet from which two people can drink simultaneously, without wasting a drop of liquor.<\/p>\n
Inspired by love and endowed with a special talent, the young man created a masterpiece: he sculpted a maiden, with the gentle smile of his beloved. Her skirt served as a cup. The girl's arms, raised above her head, supported another smaller, movable cup. Faced with the accomplished fact, the father kept his promise and accepted the marriage of the two young people. At the wedding, the bride and groom drank from that cup and thus the legend turned into a tradition that has lasted for centuries. The cup has remained to this day the symbol of love, fidelity, and luck. From Nuremberg, the tradition quickly spread throughout the world.<\/p>\n
