National competition for the selection of the project that will represent Romania at the 60th edition of the International Art Exhibition – la Biennale di Venezia

The Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Romanian Cultural Institute are organizing the competition to select the project that will represent Romania at the 60th edition of the International Art Exhibition – at the Venice Biennale, public creative competition open to the participation of individual authors or those gathered in groups, or legal entities without patrimonial purpose (non-governmental organizations).

The 2024 edition of the Venice Art Biennale will take place from April 20 to November 24, 2024, with a preview for specialists and the press from April 17-19, 2024.

The theme of the 60th edition of the International Art Exhibition – at the Venice Biennale, launched by the curator of this edition, Adriano Pedrosa, is Foreigners Everywhere (Strangers everywhere). Thus, the 2024 edition of the Biennale will feature artists who are themselves foreigners, emigrants, members of the diaspora from different countries, or refugees, especially those who have traveled between the global South and North.

To participate in the national competition, the applicant must submit a project containing the mandatory documentation provided in Competition organization regulations, displayed on the internet pages of Ministry of CultureMinistry of Foreign Affairs and Romanian Cultural Institute.

Participants in the selection competition are invited to develop a curatorial, exhibition and promotional concept that corresponds to the ideas formulated by the curator of the 60th edition of the International Art Exhibition – at the Venice Biennale or own curatorial theme.

In 2024, the budget allocated to projects that will represent Romania in the two exhibition spaces of our country within the Biennale has been supplemented, so that the Ministry of Culture will allocate 850,000 lei for the project in the Romanian pavilion in the Giardini della Biennale, and the Romanian Cultural Institute will allocate approximately 250,000 lei for the one in the New Gallery of the Romanian Institute of Culture and Humanistic Research in Venice.

According to the competition organization regulations, it will have two judging stages: the first stage with a role in defining the curatorial concept and content, followed by the selection of finalists, who will be invited to detail the technical aspects of the project in the second stage of the competition.

Registration for the Competition will be free of charge, by submitting the documentation to the headquarters of the Ministry of Culture, Bulevardul Unirii no. 22, Bucharest, until November 20, 2023, 2:30 p.m. Projects sent by e-mail or fax, incomplete ones, those that do not comply with the requirements imposed by the organizers and those that will reach the Ministry of Culture at a later date than the mentioned date, regardless of the method of transmission, will not be taken into account.

In order to achieve the purpose of the competition, a Selection Committee and a Complaints Resolution Committee will be established, approved by Order of the Minister of Culture.

Persons who participated in its organization, in the development of the regulations, employees of the organizing institutions, members of the selection committee and those of the appeals resolution committee or their relatives and in-laws, up to the second degree inclusive, respectively associates of companies/NGOs in which members of the selection committee, of the appeals resolution committee hold management positions, cannot participate in the competition. Members of the committees cannot receive professional missions related to the development of projects that will be entered in the competition.

Competition schedule:

STAGE I

  • Submission of documentation: deadline – November 20, 2023, 2:30 p.m.;
  • Judging: November 21-22, 2023;
  • Announcement of the results of STAGE I: 22 November 2023;
  • Submission of appeals: deadline – November 23, 2023, 5:00 p.m. at the headquarters of the Ministry of Culture, Bulevardul Unirii, no. 22, sector 3, code 030833 or in electronic format by e-mail to the address bienala.venetia@cultura.roaccording to the provisions of Art. 8 of the Competition Regulations;
  • Resolving complaints: November 24 – 27, 2023, according to the provisions of Art. 8 of the Competition Regulations;
  • Publication of final results: November 27, 2023, according to the provisions of Art. 8 of the Competition Regulations;
  • Meeting with representatives of the finalist teams: November 29, 2023.

STAGE II

  • Submission of documentation: deadline – January 8, 2024, 4:00 p.m.;
  • Judging: January 9-10, 2024;
  • Announcement of the results of STAGE II: January 10, 2024;
  • Submission of appeals: deadline – January 11, 2024, 5:00 PM at the headquarters of the Ministry of Culture, Bulevardul Unirii, no. 22, sector 3, code 030833 or in electronic format by e-mail to the address bienala.venetia@cultura.roaccording to the provisions of Art. 8 of the Competition Regulations;
  • Resolving complaints: January 12 – 15, 2024, according to the provisions of Art. 8;
  • Public announcement of the winning project: January 15, 2024.
